Spilling wine on your clothing or on a carpet is one of those horror moments. First there is a pause whilst everyone puts down their own wine glasses, considers what has happened, and then the suggestions start. Opinions vary across the board and everyone will want to give theirs, even if they all contradict each other. If you do have an accident, here is what actions you should be taking.

Red wine. Certainly the worst wine to spill, red wine can cause a permanent stain if not handled correctly. There has long been a myth that the best action to take if you spill red wine is to pour white wine all over it. Adding a small amount of ammonia to some talcum powder and covering the stain fully is an option that works much more effectively. Give the powder a good couple of hours to soak up all the wine and another couple to dry out itself, before hoovering the whole lot up. White wine vinegar is another substance that works well on red wine stains as it stops the binding of the tannin to the fabric and makes it easier to clean off. You need to leave the vinegar on the stain for a good hour to get the most from it.

Buying Wine

Buying wine is what we'll be focusing on in this installment of our wine 101 guide...

Most wine is bought in supermarkets, probably because they're the easiest and most accessible option. It's probably through a supermarket that many of us purchase our first few bottles of wine and, attracted by low prices, special offers, and familiar labels, we keep going back for more.

However, you won't find much in the way of quality or range of wines at your average supermarket. The country of origin may be different, the labels may be different, even the prices may be slightly different, but the wines rapidly begin to all taste the same. The reason for this being that they're made in the winery, not the vineyard, to recipes specified by the supermarkets.

Wine Storage Guide

Storing wine is the topic for this installment of our wine 101 guide...

A simple method of wine storage is to keep your bottles sideways in a dark place away from heat or light. Doing so will minimize damage (mainly in terms of deterioration of taste and flavors) to the wine and allow you to store it for as long as you desire. Still, learning a bit more about wine storage can help you maximize your wines quality.

When it comes to preserving wine, temperature is the thing that makes the most difference. Wine should normally be stored between 50-60F, although a range of 45-65F is considered OK. A temperature below the ideal range will prevent your wine from aging correctly. A higher, warmer temperature causes premature aging (not in a good way).

Can we compare the modern and newest equipment against home wine making?

Persons with discerning tastes know that home made wines makes the best quality wines in the world, because these have the distinctive taste and flavor that is often found nowhere else. Together, the local flavors of the grapes remain robust and clear, something that commercial wines (mostly those that are made with modern equipments) fail to capture. If you want to set up your own winery, you can do so with an easy wine making process that you can at home. Here are the steps:

  • First. Put the grapes in a large silo or container and soak them in plain water. Remove the pulp by crushing and pressing them either by hand or by the age-old tradition of stepping on them. To make this an easy wine making process, you need to make sure that every tool you use is clean and hygienic. When you have extracted the pulp, you can add in your fermentation-inducing ingredients like sugar or yeast, seal the pot to keep out unwanted elements, and allow the mixture to remain undisturbed for 7 to 10 days. The chosen time depends on the quantity of the mashed pulp you have: the more pulp you have, the more days it would need to ferment successfully. Read the rest of this entry »
