Jerez Your Sherry Wine

To know what Sherry wine is you have to understand what a fortified wine is. To transform a regular wine into a fortified wine grape spirits or Brandy is added to the fermenting juice to stop sugars at a certain point from converting to alcohol. Sherry is one of those wines where grape spirits is added to stop this process. After the Sherry achieves its proper alcohol levels it is tested for quality and separated into two types of Sherry: Fino and Oloroso. Each of these types of Sherry have further classifications.

In 1991, 60 Minutes broadcast a story that dealt with a phenomena we have come to know as the "French Paradox". The story posed an important question. How can it be that coronary heart disease rates among French males is significantly lower than the rate for US males when the French consume much more saturated animal fat than Americans? The French Paradox appears on the surface to contradict everything health professionals have been telling us about the rules of healthy eating.

Did you know that there are several types of Sherry available? Sherry is a fortified wine of the Jerez region of Spain. Being fortified means grape spirits are added to the wine either during the fermentation process to stop all the sugars from being converted to alcohol or after fermentation is complete. With Sherry, the spirits are added during fermentation. After fermentation Sherry is divided into two groups and from those two groups it is divided into even more types of Sherry.
