California wine vintages are is an example of the farmers and artisans who craft their wine.  The soils, the climate, valleys and coastal influences help to develop grapes with exquisite flavors. California wine growers produce some of the finest wines in the world due to the attention winegrape growers give to matching grape varieties to climate and location.

The Spanish influence on most California wine is quite obvious. The Spaniards first planted vineyards in the 18th century as each mission was established. Grapes were needed by the Catholic monks for religious ceremony as well as basic provision. These vineyards were planted with the common black grape which was imported from Mexico. The original mission grape plantations would primarily use the common black grape or "Mission Grape" as it was often called.

If you are one of the many people around the globe who are passionate about wine you may be wondering about having a wine cellar built in your home. There are many reasons you might want to do this. Some people just want a place they can store some wine for a few years until the wine has aged. Whilst there are others who view wine as an investment just like stocks and shares. It's amazing just how much wine can increase in value over a couple of decades.

Whatever type of drinker of buyer you are, building a wine cellar can really add to your home. The problem with wines is that they don't keep for forever and a day. To keep them in peak condition you need to provide the best possible conditions. These conditions should be dark and cool. Some cellars that are built underground naturally have these qualities. However if they don't you need to buy some equipment to allow you to control conditions much more easily.

A really good wine gives you a taste of where it was produced and a real sense of place and character. Imagine how much greater your appreciation of that wine would be if you could experience your favourite wine region first hand. There are several wine tasting holiday packages available that whisk you through the terroir on a lightning-fast air-conditioned tour bus. That doesn’t really give you the time to appreciate the wine at all, let alone absorb the atmosphere, the customs and the local food.

Far better are the more intimate active holidays that give the space and time to walk through a wine region, drinking in the scenery and sampling the local food as well as tasting the wines. You won't get a better reward for this approach than in Chile.    It’s said that when God finished making the world, he put all the bits he had left over – mountains, lakes, spectacular waterfalls, deserts, glaciers – into Chile.   It is one of the world’s great producers of wines and the ideal location for walking holidays as you don’t have to walk very far to experience dramatic changes in scenery and climate.

It can be embarrassing if you are out on a date at a fancy restaurant and you don’t know the right wine to order, it’s even worse if you are out with another couple. Even though ordering a bottle of wine while dining out isn’t all that different than buying from a winery you do have people watching you and that can make the situation a little uncomfortable if you don’t have at least some kind of knowledge of basic wines.

The thing to remember is that not even the so-called wine masters that go to all the wine tasting events know every wine. What is important to you as a novice is to just study up a little if you have a big date coming up and you have an idea where you are going and what kind of food and wines are likely to be there. You should also try to get an idea of what the cost will be ahead of time so you aren’t surprised by that as well.

Deciding on the best way to let your wine breathe can be a difficult one.I am ready to start enjoying my glass of wine right away when I open a bottle. I generally don’t have much patience for allowing it to breathe.  Why do we let wine breathe?  By letting your wine breathe or aerate it allows for the full flavors to emerge and make the wine more palatable. While there are many wines that do not need to go through this process, it is good to know the little details that can make a big difference. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy your wine to its fullest potential.

The reason why wines needs to breathe, or age, is because of tannins. Tannins can transfer into wine during the fermentation process from seeds and skins of grapes. They are a natural preservative that diminish overtime allowing fuller flavors to emerge. White wines and some red wines have low levels of these and therefore do not need aging, or periods of breathing, before drinking. Generally all red wines can benefit from aeration, but those that are lighter and fruitier generally don't require much aeration.

Introduction To Wine

There is a lot more to a bottle of wine than a pretty container. Actually, the container usually has absolutely no direct bearing on the quality of the contents. A fine wine is also more than a fermented grape. The true beauty of a fine wine lies in the care with which the whole process is completed.

A wine does not start as wine. Most commonly, wines get their beginnings as a humble grape. There are about 4,000 distinctively different species of grapes, that can be used to produce many different combinations of wine.

Each grape is generalized to a specific climate, region or altitude, but a few species are extremely hardy and will grow anywhere. Even the same grape may grow differently - therefore taste differently - from one climate, region or altitude. The grapes are cared for in a way that will produce the healthiest possible crop. The better the crop, the better the end product.

This item was alot nicer than I thought it would be. My Daughter has one she paid 4 times as much. I thought this one would not be made as well as hers. There is no difference in quality.

At first I wasn't sure how stable this would be, but it held 6 bottles beautifully and made a lovely show piece as well. Think about where you're going to want to hang 6 bottles though, I had to return it because the only place to hang such a thing in my space exposed my wine to too much sunlight.

Wine has a history of thousands of years and is now enjoyed worldwide. Most people store wine in racks in their kitchen, however if you have an expensive bottle of fine wine more care should be taken. Like food, wine is perishable and understanding how to store wine correctly is vital for it to age well. The first important factor to know is that wine does have enemies. They are heat, light, oxygen, low humidity and also vibration.

Before Opening
All wines should be stored away from UV light as this will damage the wine. The storage area should be dark, as ultraviolet light causes degradation of stable organic compounds found in wine thus affecting the aroma, flavour and structure of the wine. Dark bottles are better protected against UV rays and some bottles do have UV filters built into the glass, but UV rays can still penetrate to spoil the wine. If you cannot store wine out of contact with UV light, then the bottle can be wrapped in cloth for protection, however this will not produce best results.
